How to Catch a Rabbit

Hello you,

When I was younger, I used to have a childminder who had rabbits. I was never able to catch these rabbits, and honestly, I didn’t understand why until she explained it to me.

If you walk towards a rabbit, it will see you and hop away because you are a threat. You walk towards it, and it feels danger because you’re moving fast and it’s vulnerable.

She taught me that to catch a rabbit, you have to walk in circles and move closer. Sometimes you pause, pick some grass or a flower, then slowly stand up and move closer again.

I did that, and it worked. I caught my first rabbit, and I was so proud of myself.

So why am I talking about catching a rabbit?

Well… today I realised: to achieve goals is to catch a rabbit.

When we try to achieve the ultimate goal or a dream straight on, without setting smaller goals or even little pauses to appreciate what we have achieved, the goal or dream usually doesn’t stick. It has no foundation to land on because you didn’t take time to build one.

I used to believe that reaching a goal meant that I would set my mind on it and then do it.

The best example is riding a bike. When I wanted to learn how to ride a bike without safety wheels, I just took them off, sat on my bike, and started pedalling. It worked, I got to my goal, but I did get hurt a few times. I didn’t know how to turn corners, and I didn’t know how to get on while balancing. Those things put me in danger.

Then other times, I would overprepare, so that when I started, the goal would look so far away that I didn’t even want to reach it anymore because it seemed impossible.

So I realised that I have to circle the rabbit. I need to make detours and lose myself in a task to be able to achieve my goals. I need to build skills to be able to keep the goal when I’ve caught it.

I’d say that picking the grass for the rabbit is like building skills. You gather skills so that when you are standing in front of your goal, you are able to not just catch it but actually interact with it and trust it.

Walking in circles means to not just go for it but to also have fun while doing it. And fun can look different to everyone. I love Excel because it frustrates me. I love that feeling! I bask in this feeling of frustration to get ahead. I use it to fuel my determination to show Excel who’s the boss. If I didn’t do that and just kept trying to get the right formula or code, then I would give up pretty quickly.

And last of all, the steps. Each step in that circle is one small goal that you have reached to get to the end boss. They are little pauses that you allow yourself to see where you are and who you are. You check if you are still walking towards your rabbit or if you have increased the distance again. It is a time to do things intentionally. Each step is one that you choose to take.

I think this is why manifestation works. It’s basically setting a goal and then walking in circles around it until you manage to catch it.

Maybe manifestation is the same thing as going after goals? It’s just a different approach to it.

Either way… I hope this brain dump gave you something and maybe even taught you something.

Lots of love,
Me
